About Nespero

A small firm built around meaningful work.

Nespero is a husband-and-wife-run accounting firm led by Daniel and Mari Carl Fisher. Daniel is a CPA who started the firm in 2019, and over time Mari Carl became increasingly involved in the day-to-day work. Today, we work together from our Wilmington office, serving small businesses and nonprofits and handling the accounting and financial processes they rely on to run their organizations well.

Daniel started Nespero looking for two things from his work: more flexibility to build life around family, and the opportunity to use accounting in a way that put him closer to the people he was serving. As Nespero became something we were building together, that idea became part of how we both wanted to work: knowing our clients, understanding what they were building, and seeing firsthand the difference our work could make.

We serve small businesses and nonprofits with bookkeeping, financial reporting, problem-solving, and fractional CFO support. Our small business clients are primarily property management and service-based businesses. We tend to work with clients who want more than someone keeping the books—they want someone who understands their business, can untangle problems, and will actually care about getting things right.

You won't just be completing accounting tasks. You'll be another accounting brain in the room—bringing your own judgment, experience, and ideas as we solve problems, onboard new clients, and continue building the firm.

Daniel leads the more complex accounting, problem-solving, and CFO work. Mari Carl handles much of the day-to-day bookkeeping and month-end preparation, working from well-documented processes we've built for each client. As we grow, we're looking for another experienced accountant to strengthen the layer between those two roles—someone who can support Mari Carl, review the work, handle higher-level accounting issues, and begin taking ownership of the monthly financial review process. You'd work closely with Daniel on exceptions, difficult accounting questions, and onboarding new clients.

The Role

What you'll work on

The work in this role will generally fall into four areas: month-end close and financial review, onboarding new clients, special projects and CFO support, and client communication.

01

Month-End Close & Financial Review

A major part of the role will be reviewing accounting work prepared by our bookkeeping team and helping move clients through month-end close. You'll review financial statements and supporting schedules, look for unusual or incorrect activity, make or recommend necessary adjustments, and work with the team to resolve issues you identify.

You'll sign off on assigned areas of the close once you're comfortable that the accounting is complete and accurate. Daniel will generally provide the final level of review before financials are released to the client. Over time, the goal is for you to take increasing ownership of the monthly close and financial review process for the clients assigned to you.

02

Client Onboarding

You'll play an important role when we bring on a new client, beginning with participating alongside Daniel in discovery through client meetings, working sessions, or reviewing their existing accounting records and systems.

From there, we'll work together to identify what needs to be cleaned up, changed, or built. You'll help develop the game plan and take ownership of implementing significant portions of it—cleaning up accounting issues, establishing processes, documenting how the account should be handled going forward, and preparing the client for our recurring workflow.

03

Special Projects & CFO Support

The remainder of the role will involve a variety of accounting projects and opportunities to support our fractional CFO work. These may include investigating accounting issues, cleaning up or improving financial processes, analyzing financial information, helping build reports, and solving one-off problems for clients.

You'll work closely with Daniel on these projects, with the expectation that as you become familiar with our clients and their businesses, you'll be able to take increasing ownership and carry projects forward independently.

04

Client Communication

As you become familiar with our clients and take ownership of more of their accounting work, you'll become a point of contact for certain accounting questions. This may include communicating by email or text, following up when information is needed, and responding directly to questions related to the work you're handling.

We don't expect you to know every answer immediately. Part of the role is knowing when to investigate something yourself, when to work through it with the team, and when to bring Daniel into the conversation.

Skills & Experience

We're looking for strong accounting judgment.

Someone who is comfortable reviewing work prepared by others and digging into problems when the numbers don't make sense.

What We're Looking For

  • At least 2 years of accounting experience.
  • QuickBooks Online experience.
  • Comfort reviewing financial statements and identifying unusual or incorrect activity.
  • Ability to prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, prepaids, and other month-end adjustments.
  • Strong accounting judgment—the ability to recognize when something doesn't look right and investigate until you understand why.
  • Strong attention to detail while still being able to see the bigger picture.
  • Ability to clearly explain accounting issues, give constructive feedback, and work through questions with other team members.
  • Comfort learning new software and working in a technology-heavy accounting environment.
  • Ability to work independently and remotely while also being available to work with us in person in Wilmington as needed.

Especially Valuable

  • Public accounting experience.
  • Experience with short-term rental property management, nonprofits, or service-based businesses.
  • Experience with tools such as Double, Excel, Google Sheets, Zapier, Make, n8n, or similar automation platforms.
  • Comfort using AI as a problem-solving tool—whether researching an accounting issue, improving a workflow, analyzing data, or helping create simple tools and automations.
Compensation & Time Commitment

Flexible, part-time work with meaningful responsibility.

Compensation
$40–$45 / hour

Compensation depends on experience, qualifications, and the level of responsibility you're prepared to take on. The higher end of the range would generally be appropriate if you bring significant accounting experience, a CPA license, prior review or supervisory experience, or the ability to quickly take ownership of more complex accounting and client-facing responsibilities.

Schedule
~8 hours / week

This is a part-time position with flexibility in when those hours are completed. Because much of our work revolves around monthly financial reporting, hours may increase during the beginning of the month when we're completing month-end close and reviewing client financials. We're looking for enough flexibility in your schedule to increase your availability during heavier periods.

Outside of month-end close, time will be spent on ongoing accounting and review work, client onboarding, special projects, and potentially supporting the delivery of fractional CFO services. Most work can be completed remotely. We’d prefer someone based in the Wilmington area who’s available to work with us in person periodically, but we’re open to considering highly qualified candidates who aren’t local.
